Texas State University is a public institution of higher learning that was founded in 1899 under the name of Southwest Texas State Normal School. Texas State University Admission Policies and Requirements
Admission requirements vary considerably due to different factors chief among them being the intended program of study and if the applicant is a domestic or international student. However, some general requirements all domestic students are expected to meet include:
- 4 credits in English
- 4 credits in Maths
- 4 credits in Science
- 3 credits in Social Studies
- 2 credits in Foreign Language
- 1 credit of Fine Arts

In place of ACT and SAT scores for the 2022 session, applicants are required to be ranked in the top 75% of their graduating class.
Transfer students are required to have completed 30 hours of transferable credit with a minimum GPA of 2.25 from any United States accredited college.
International applicants who graduated from a United States high school and completed three years of regular English coursework will be held to the same admission standards as U.S. applicants and will therefore not need to present an IELTS or a TOEFL. Such applicants are however encouraged to submit an SAT or ACT. In addition to the aforementioned category, international applicants who score 520 or higher in SAT or 21 and above in ACT will not need any other English Proficiency Test. Eight other categories of international applicants will not be required to present an IELTS or TOEFL. Applicants are also required to have a minimum 3.38 GPA on the 4.0 scale.

Texas State University is a lightly selective institution with an admission rate of 85.4%. So for every 100 applicants, 84 are accepted.

Texas State University has various residence halls or living options to adequately cater to the diverse needs of their resident population. They offer different accommodation styles ranging from traditional to apartment. However, the Department of Housing and Residential Life opines that a traditional hall is the best for first-year students. Consequently, freshmen under the age of 20 (by September 1 for fall admission and January 1 for spring admission) with fewer than 30 semester credit hours are required to live in the residence halls on campus. In addition, all students who graduated from high school within the preceding one year of the semester of their admission are required to live on campus regardless of the number of credits they may have accumulated before attending Texas State University.
