Gonzaga University is a private, nonprofit Jesuit institution founded by a Jesuit missionary and Italian-born priest who goes by the name Joseph Cataldo in the year 1887. Named for the young Jesuit saint Aloysius Gonzaga, the University boasts accreditation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. This post is a guide through basic information you would need as an aspirant seeking to apply for undergraduate studies. Gonzaga University is located in Spokane, Washington. Its largest programs are Engineering and Business/commerce, and it has gained special accolades for major programs such as Nursing, Nursing Anesthesia, English language, Teacher Ed, Music programs, and Law School. With an average class size of 23, a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1, a graduation rate of 86%, and a whopping 94% rate of graduates employed or pursuing higher degrees, it is quite obvious that the school is very attentive to the academic needs of students and provides them with all the training they need to apply all the classroom knowledge in real life, producing efficient and productive individuals for the society.

Admission requirements


The Gonzaga University is ‘test optional’. This means that there are conditions as to whether or not you would require an SAT or ACT score to apply for college admission. These conditions include:

  • It is mandatory for students who were homeschooled and underwent less than 30 semesters or 45 quarter college credits to submit an SAT or ACT at the time of application.
  • For international students, it is necessary to submit test scores of either TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, iTEP, or Duolingo as proof of proficiency in the English language.

Please note that students applying without tests have the same opportunities as students applying with tests. Such opportunities include; admission, automatic merit scholarships, direct admission to nursing and engineering, the Honors Program, and other Gonzaga scholarships.

As an applicant, you are expected to graduate from an accredited high school with a college preparatory curriculum. Evidence that you can complete the University’s requirements for graduation must also be presented.

In addition to that, you are expected to score above average in the preparatory courses, which include: English language (4 years), Mathematics (3-4 years), History/Social Studies (3 years), Foreign Language (2-3 years), and Science (3-4 years).

Applicants are also encouraged to take challenging courses such as AP, IB, and Honors. It is also advisable for students to take 4 to 5 academic courses in senior year.

Although Gonzaga University is “test-optional” and they have no required minimum grade point average or test score, Gonzaga’s Office of Admission reviews each application thoroughly, and the following guidelines should be strictly adhered to:

  • The applicant must have an ACT composite of 23 or below
  • The applicant should have a disciplinary and academic history with more detailed descriptions than the typical application.
  • An SAT combined score for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math at 1150 or below.
  • A grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or below.

Furthermore, there is a list of items that the Gonzaga Office of Admission considers as part of the application to the university, and they include:

  • Curriculum and school
  • Grade point average and grade trends
  • Activities and honors
  • College essay
  • SAT or ACT scores ( if submitted as the Gonzaga University is “test-optional.”

It is important to note that admission interviews may be conducted for applicants, and these interviews may be done virtually or in-person, or even where you live. To know which of these is most appropriate, it is best to contact your admission counselor.

In addition to that, Gonzaga University requests applicants’ disciplinary records or criminal history. This is to a clearer definition of the timing and nature of any violations before any decision to admit such applicant. This does not cause any unreasonable or automatic denial of admission.

Finally, for the Nursing and Engineering programs, the applicant is advised to declare either of both programs major on the common application to be considered for admission. This is called direct admission.


At Gonzaga University, the cost of tuition is $49,800. Other expenses include: required fees – $935, books and supplies – $1,278, loan fees – $88, personal expenses – $2,180 and transportation – $1,720. To recognize the students’ achievements at Gonzaga University, the school offers merit scholarships to 98% of its incoming students. Gonzaga has promised never to decrease funded scholarships and grants as long as a good academic record is maintained, as defined in the Gonzaga catalog, during the applicant’s continuous full-time four-year enrollment.

As long as you are a student who has completed the Application for Admission, you are automatically considered for one of the many need-blind scholarships. You will not be asked to present any separate application forms.

Some of the factors considered for the scholarship include recommendations, grade point average, quality of written application, optional SAT or ACT scores, optional interviews, extracurricular activities, and difficulty with the curriculum.

Furthermore, first-year applicants are guaranteed four-year scholarships; this is applicable to first-year students and first-year transfers entering with less than 30-semester credits, while students on transfer who are entering with transfer credits of  31-59 are guaranteed scholarships lasting up to 6 semesters. Applicants entering with transfer credits of 60+ are guaranteed scholarships lasting up to 4 semesters.

Students who have been offered merit scholarships have to be admitted to the university and enrolled in 12+ credits every term. These students are mandated to keep a good academic record of maintaining continuous scholarship.


Gonzaga University has a 98% record of applicants who have received a very encouraging merit scholarship. Students awarded these scholarships are usually informed via an acceptance packet sent in the mail.
