Upon its establishment in 1942, Carleton University was known as Carleton College originally operating as a private non-denominational evening college. The school was established to cater to the educational needs of returning World War II veterans. The Carleton University Act which was originally passed in 1952 and amended in 1957 gave the institution its current name after the now-dissolved Carleton County which in turn was named in honor of Guy Carleton who was Governor-General of The Canadas from 1786 to 1796.

Acceptance Rate and Admission Requirements

The acceptance rate at Carleton makes getting admitted into the university no walk in the park. With an acceptance rate of 21%, it simply means that only 21 out of every 100 applicants get admitted while the rest gets a rejection. All applicants are required to have a minimum GPA of 4.02% and either a 6.5 IELTS score or a TOEFL score of 86 as proof of English proficiency as well as an overall average of at least 70%. In addition to these general requirements are program-specific requirements which vary from program to program. Some programs have their course prerequisites and prerequisite averages. Some programs require applicants to have certain supplementary admission portfolios. All in all, only applicants with very good grades get admitted.

Tuition Fees

Getting a university education is a big investment and like all good things comes at a cost. You must have an idea of how much studying at your dream school will cost even before you kickstart your admission process. This is to enable you to plan carefully.

The tuition fee a student will pay at Carleton University is determined by several contributory factors chief among them being citizenship and residency. Other factors include the program and course of study.

Domestic students living on campus will pay between $22,037-$26,582 which will cover tuition and ancillary fees, traditional residence room and board, books, and supplies, and personal expenses. Off-campus domestic students will pay between $19,276-$23,823 for the same purposes listed above.

International students at Carleton pay more tuition fees than their domestic counterparts. Asides from citizenship, residency, and program of study, another factor that influences the tuition fees of an international student is whether such student is enrolling for the Fall/Winter or Summer term. However, an international student who decides to reside on campus will pay between $45,477.09-$74,680.09 while an off-campus international student will pay between $63,172.09-$90,643.09.

Scholarships

Because it is not lost on the management of Carleton University that not all students will be able to afford tuition fees at the university, and because they do not want to deny deserving students the opportunity of being schooled at one of the finest universities in Canada, the school has tons of financial aid packages. The university is reputed to have one of the most generous scholarship and bursary programs in Canada. The university has a variety of merit-based scholarships for both domestic and international students alike.

Carleton University offers Entrance Scholarships to students who have an admission average of 80% or better. The scholarships are renewable and are open to international students as well. Students who are entering Carleton for the first time from either a high school or CEGEP and have no previous post-secondary education also stand a chance of being awarded Entrance Scholarships.

Transfer students who are transferring to any full-time undergraduate program at Carleton from another Canadian university or college and who have an excellent academic record may be eligible for one of the university’s Scholarships for Transfer Students.

The Carleton Prestige Scholarships are for students who are entering the university directly from high school or CEGEP with an admission average of 90% or better. Students who meet this requirement will be assessed by a selection committee.

The Awards for International Students are one-time merit-based awards given to international students who are entering Carleton directly from high school based on their grades at the time of their admission. This award comprises the International Award of Excellence and the International Award of Merit. A student who qualifies will benefit from one or the other.

Worthy of mention is that the university has other scholarships that are reserved for students studying certain specific programs.
